Image Gallery Reflection

Our group made a website through Coppermine PhotoGallery. The website we created was made for up-and-coming artists, where they could post their work to be viewed by all. The art could be rated and commented upon by anyone who accesses the site. The purpose was to allow artists to gain recognition among fellow artists and art lovers that share their same passion. Unlike some of the other groups, we did not run into very many problems. We were able to upload, crop, and comment on photos with little trouble. We were also able to change the background of the website, and allow each adminstrative user to work the cite with their own choice of background. I think this was mainly because our website was not very complex. It was easy to set up and was user friendly from either end. Our website is quite functional and we think it could be used in a real-world context.

Exotic Plants

We were still unable to add text into our website, so we could not upload pictures, fun facts, articles, etc. about our plants.

E-commerce

We encountered many problems with creating this website. At first we wanted to do an auction type website but that didn't work because of technical difficulties, so we ended up doing cms with a shopping cart. Our idea was to sell exotic plants, and we posted a picture of a venus fly trap and did the pricing system as well. Then our website crashed again so we had to redo the entire thing, and then it wouldn't let us add pictures or text but these are the things we were going to do: create a 'fun facts' page about our exotic plants, create a blog so that customers could post what they wanted improved about our website or what additional, different plants they wanted to see.

This segment of your course this quarter is devoted to thinking creatively about possible business uses of open source software. The suite of open source tools at your disposal includes everything from content management systems, to blogs, to customer relationship management applications, to discussion boards, to e-commerce programs, to image galleries, to online ad management, to project management, to e-learning, to online polls and surveys, to wikis (see: Fantastico Features).
